Massachusetts had 6,593,587 residents as of 2009, with an increase of 3.9% from 2000 to 2009. 5.9% were children under 5 years of age in 2009, when the survey was last taken. 21.7% were under 18 in 2009. 13.6% were age 65 and over during the same year. 51.4% of the population was female in 2009. 85.9% of the population was white in the same year, while 7.1% was black, 5.1% was Asian, and 8.8% was Hispanic. 12.2% were foreign-born in 2009. 18.7% were over the age of 5 in 2000 and did not speak English at home. 84.8% were high school graduates over 25, as of the year 2000. 33.2% had a Bachelor’s degree or higher in the year 2000, and were over age 25. 1,084,746 had a disability and were over 5 years old as of 2000. There were 2,443,580 households in 2000 and there were 2.51 persons per household. The median household income as of 2008 was $65,304. 10.1% were living below the poverty level in 2008.
